Using Google Trends for content and marketing strategy

Google Trends shows how often people search for a term over time and by region. It’s free and doesn’t give exact search volume — it gives relative interest (0–100). For small businesses, that’s enough to spot rising topics, plan content around demand, and compare keywords or regions.

This guide shows you how to use Trends for content ideas, seasonal planning, and basic competitive insight so your marketing is aligned with what people are actually searching for.

What Google Trends shows you

You enter a search term and see a graph of interest over time (e.g. last 12 months or 5 years). You can filter by country (e.g. South Africa), category, and type of search (Web, Image, News, YouTube, etc.). You can also compare up to five terms to see which is more popular. “Breakout” or sharp spikes mean a term is rising fast. Use it to see seasonality (e.g. “tax return” peaks in July) and to spot emerging topics.

Step 1: Find content and keyword ideas

Type a core topic (e.g. “website design”, “VOIP”, “digital marketing”) and check “Related queries” and “Related topics” at the bottom. These show what people search for alongside your term — ideal for blog titles, FAQs, and service pages. Filter by your country so the ideas match your market. Combine a few related terms into one piece of content to cover real demand.

Step 2: Plan around seasonality

Switch the time range to “Past 5 years” or “Past 12 months” to see when interest peaks. Plan content and campaigns so they go live before the peak (e.g. a “how to” guide a few weeks before the trend spikes). That way you’re already ranking when searches increase.

Step 3: Compare keywords and regions

Use “Compare” to add two or more terms (e.g. “web design” vs “website design”, or “SEO” vs “digital marketing”). You’ll see which is more searched in your region and over time. Use the winner for titles, headings, and URLs where it fits naturally. You can also compare the same term across regions (e.g. South Africa vs another country) if you operate in more than one market.

Step 4: Use it with other tools

Trends doesn’t show exact volume, so pair it with Google Keyword Planner, Search Console, or another keyword tool to see approximate search numbers. Use Trends for direction and timing; use other tools to confirm volume and difficulty. Together they give you a clearer picture for content and ads.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Trends free?

Yes. Google Trends is free. You need a Google account to use some features (e.g. longer time ranges or more comparisons), but the core data is available to everyone.

Can I use Trends for South Africa?

Yes. When you run a search, set the geography filter to “South Africa” (or a specific region if available). That way the interest scores and related queries reflect what people in your market are searching for.
