A marketing funnel is a simple way to group people by how close they are to buying. At the top, many people may know your brand or category; at the bottom, a smaller group is ready to choose a supplier or click “buy.” In between, people compare options, read reviews, and build trust.
Teams label those layers with shorthand: TOFU (top of funnel), MOFU (middle), and BOFU (bottom). You will also see “full-funnel” strategy — meaning you plan content and ads for every stage, not only the last click.
What is a marketing funnel?
Picture a wide cone: at the top you have everyone who might ever need what you sell. As they learn more, compare, and narrow choices, fewer people remain — until some become customers. That shape is the funnel. It is not perfect (real buyers loop back, compare again, and take time), but it is a useful map for budgets, messages, and channels.
The point is not to “push” everyone down in one step. It is to meet people with the right message at the right moment: education when they are discovering options, proof when they are comparing, and a clear offer when they are ready to act.
TOFU — Top of funnel (awareness)
TOFU is the awareness stage. People may not know your business yet; they are searching the problem, the category, or your town plus the service (“plumber Strand”, “how to choose a hosting package”). Content here is often educational: blog posts, short videos, social posts that help without hard selling.
Metrics you might watch include reach, impressions, video views, and traffic from broad keywords or social. Spend here builds the pool of people who can enter MOFU later.
MOFU — Middle of funnel (consideration)
MOFU is consideration. The audience knows what they need and is comparing vendors, reading case studies, watching demos, or signing up for a lead magnet. Your job is to show why you fit: expertise, process, guarantees, testimonials, and answers to “why you vs. someone cheaper or closer.”
This is where comparison pages, webinars, retargeting to site visitors, and email sequences often sit. If you skip MOFU and only run TOFU ads, you get attention without enough trust to convert.
BOFU — Bottom of funnel (conversion)
BOFU is conversion. These people are close to a decision: they may have a cart open, request a quote, or call for pricing. Messages should be direct: clear offers, limited-time value, easy contact, risk reducers (warranty, trial, money-back), and frictionless next steps.
Search ads on high-intent keywords, remarketing to people who viewed pricing, and sales follow-up live here. If you only invest in BOFU, you may pay more per lead because fewer people know you yet — your funnel can feel “empty at the top.”
Retention (after purchase)
Retention is not always drawn as part of the same diagram, but it belongs in a full-funnel plan. Happy customers repeat, refer, and cost less than acquiring strangers. Onboarding emails, support, loyalty offers, and asking for reviews all support retention.
For subscription or recurring services, retention is as important as new leads — sometimes more.
Why the funnel matters for budget and creative
Splitting budget and creative by stage stops two common mistakes: (1) only brand awareness with no path to enquire, and (2) only hard-sell ads to people who have never heard of you. A balanced plan allocates spend across TOFU, MOFU, and BOFU so there is always a next step.
At Strand Web we use full-funnel thinking when we plan digital marketing for clients — from who we reach first to how we nurture interest and convert. If you want help applying this to your business, you can read about our digital marketing services or contact us for a conversation.
Frequently asked questions
What does TOFU stand for?
TOFU means “top of funnel.” It is the awareness stage: people are discovering needs, categories, or your brand. Content is usually broad and educational rather than a hard sell.
What does MOFU stand for?
MOFU means “middle of funnel.” It is the consideration stage: people compare options, read reviews, and evaluate fit. Your role is to build trust and differentiate (case studies, FAQs, demos, retargeting).
What does BOFU stand for?
BOFU means “bottom of funnel.” It is the conversion stage: people are ready to buy, book, or request a quote. Messaging should be clear on offer, price or next step, and how to complete the action with minimal friction.
What is “full-funnel” marketing?
Full-funnel marketing means you deliberately plan for every stage — awareness, consideration, conversion, and often retention — instead of only one. That way you are not only paying for cold reach or only bidding on the last click.
Why not put all my budget on BOFU?
BOFU often has the highest intent, but the audience is small and competitive. If no one enters from TOFU/MOFU, you compete for the same expensive clicks with little brand recognition. Top and middle stages fill the pipeline so BOFU has more qualified demand.
How does retention fit the funnel?
Retention keeps customers after the first sale: service quality, onboarding, email, loyalty, and referrals. It is cheaper than constantly replacing one-off buyers and supports long-term revenue.
TOFU, MOFU, and BOFU are shorthand for stages of the buyer journey — awareness, consideration, and conversion — with retention rounding out a full-funnel view. Using them helps you match message and spend to where people actually are, instead of guessing. Want help building a funnel-aligned plan for your business?
