What a website costs in South Africa — hosting to full build

Website costs in South Africa range from a few hundred rand a year for basic hosting to tens of thousands for a custom build. The gap is huge because “a website” can mean very different things: hosting and email only, a full business site with design and support, or an eCommerce store. Domain registration is usually a separate annual cost.

This article breaks down typical price points so you know what to expect and where your budget is best spent.

Hosting and domain only (roughly R50–R200/month)

At the low end you pay for email and hosting — a place for your site to live. You might already have a site or use a simple builder. You get little or no design, no ongoing edits from the provider, and you (or someone else) handle content and updates. A .co.za domain is billed separately (from R137/year). Suitable when you only need a professional mailbox and a stable host. At Strand Web, our Hosting Only package starts from R50/month for email setup and hosting; it does not include a domain or a designed website.

Basic or simple site (roughly R500–R2 000/month or a once-off build)

The next step at many providers is a simple designed site: a few pages, contact form, mobile-friendly layout. Some charge a once-off build plus hosting; others bundle design in a monthly package. At Strand Web, Basic Hosting (from R150/month) is more storage and mailboxes only — still no design. A designed site starts at our Standard package. Good for individuals and small ventures that need an online presence without complex features.

Business website with design and support (monthly packages)

Many businesses need a proper site plus ongoing support: updates, security, and sometimes SEO or Google Business Profile help. Monthly packages often include hosting, email, the site, and a set number of edits or support hours. Domain renewal is typically billed annually on top. The big differentiator is whether the initial design is included in the monthly fee. At Strand Web, from our Standard Website Package to our Premium eCommerce site, we include the initial design in your monthly billed amount — so you’re not paying a separate five-figure design fee for that first site. A further redesign is quoted separately.

eCommerce and custom builds

Online shops (product catalogues, cart, payments) cost more: setup, integration, and ongoing support. Prices depend on the number of products, payment gateways, and how much custom work is needed. Full custom builds (coded from scratch for unique requirements) are the most expensive and are usually justified only when off-the-shelf solutions don’t fit.

Where to save without cutting corners

Choose a package that matches what you need: don’t pay for eCommerce if you only need a brochure site. Use a provider that includes design in the monthly fee so you avoid a large upfront build cost. Lock in domain and hosting with a local provider you trust. Skip unnecessary extras until you need them. And plan for ongoing costs: hosting, updates, and support are part of running a website, not a one-off expense.

Frequently asked questions

Is a once-off build or monthly package better?

It depends. Once-off builds suit you if you’re happy to manage hosting, updates, and content yourself. Monthly packages suit you if you want design and support included and predictable costs. Many small businesses prefer packages so they don’t have to chase developers for every change.

What’s included in “design included” or “site built for you”?

It means the provider designs and builds your website as part of the monthly fee — so you get a proper site without a separate design invoice for that first build. Always confirm exactly what’s included, and whether a later redesign is extra.

Are there hidden costs I should watch for?

Check what’s included: domain renewal, SSL, backups, email, and support. Some providers charge extra for these. Also clarify whether content (text and images) is your responsibility or theirs, and what happens if you want more pages or features later.
